The Safe Home Bill
This and other Long Island neighborhoods have been plagued by an increasing number of violent home invasions and robberies. Some people have proposed a bill that would increase the penalty from 10 years in jail to 20 years.
I can understand that many have been alarmed by these home invasions, shootings and other violent crimes in our neighborhoods. I can also understand that there is a need to feel safe and that something must be done. I am concerned, however, that the response suggested in this bill seems to be revenge, punishment and maginalization of even more people.
I hope the proponents have considered directing their energy and efforts towards solving the underlying issues that cause these violent acts, such as poverty, education, gangs, drugs, guns, etc., etc.
Here are a couple of things everybody can do that will help. Turn off the TV or radio when the message is violent, verbal or physical. Give generously to faith based and other poverty relief organizations. Leave the violent video games and CDs at the store. Support organizations that give young people alternatives to gangs and get them into productive education or jobs.
